CompTIA SecOT+: A New Certification in Operational Tech

CompTIA is introducing SecOT+, a certification that addresses the skills needed in operational technology (OT) environments. Instead of following the usual IT track, SecOT+ focuses on unique threats encountered in industrial systems.
The danger of cyberattacks in these environments extends beyond stolen data. With attacks growing more aggressive, CompTIA wants IT and OT experts working side by side on the same defense plan.
Why CompTIA SecOT+ is Launching Now
OT is responsible for running the power grids, factories, and transport systems that society relies on every day. The engineers, technicians, and operators in these roles usually prioritize safety and keeping machines running, with cybersecurity often being a second thought.
On the other hand, IT professionals know networks inside out. But their work rarely requires them to be on the plant floor or handle heavy equipment. CompTIA SecOT+ is designed to bring IT and OT professionals onto the same page, giving them one security playbook.
Real, Rising Threats to OT
A Fortinet survey revealed that 73% of OT organizations reported being hit by cyber intrusions last year. Of these, 31% said they encountered more than six attacks.
Cyberattacks on physical infrastructure are not only happening, but are, in fact, widespread. With the SecOT+ certification, CompTIA aims to equip professionals to directly defend against these threats.
What Will the SecOT+ Certification Cover?
Although the final exam blueprint is still under development, CompTIA has shared the domains that SecOT+ will cover.
Risk-based cybersecurity approaches
Compliance and frameworks
Hardening and secure configuration
Third-party and supply chain security
Legacy system security
What Makes SecOT+ Different?
Compared to other CompTIA certifications, such as CySA+, SecOT+ focuses more on specific environments where downtime could result in damaged equipment, lost production, or risks to public safety. As with other CompTIA certifications, SecOT+ will emphasize real-world practice, not just theory, with hands-on scenarios included in the training.
Certification Timeline
CompTIA will begin developing SecOT+ in the latter part of 2025 using its ISO-accredited process. The expected release is scheduled for the second half of 2026, although timelines are subject to change. How CompTIA SecOT+ Benefits OT Professionals
In 2024 alone, more than 180,000 job postings in the U.S. asked for OT roles with cybersecurity skills. For IT professionals, CompTIA SecOT+ provides a straightforward way to validate your security skills in this field. For OT engineers and operators, it creates opportunities in industries where safety and reliability come first.
Close the Gap Between IT and OT
If you plan to take this certification, you can start preparing now to stay ahead. CompTIA SecOT+ represents a significant advancement in OT cybersecurity. By aligning IT and OT professionals, it addresses a critical need while creating new career opportunities.
