ISC2 Brings Computer Adaptive Testing to CC, SSCP & CCSP

Starting October 2025, ISC2 began using the Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) format for its three key certifications: Certified in Cybersecurity (CC), Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP), and Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP).
With this update for CC, SSCP, and CCSP, ISC2 is replacing the old linear format. The move brings these certifications in step with the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) exam, which transitioned to CAT in 2024.
Here's why they're making this switch, what it means for test-takers, and how to prepare for the shift.
Why the Switch to Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT)
This new exam format gives you a fairer, faster, and more secure way to take the exam. Instead of answering the same fixed set of questions as everyone else, you start with easy-to-answer items. From there, the test adapts in real time based on your answers.
With each response, it recalculates your skill level and picks the next question, so each new question is calibrated to give you about a 50 percent chance of answering correctly. Once the system has enough data to measure your ability with high confidence, the exam ends.
By working this way, CAT reduces question exposure and measures what you know more precisely.
What CAT Means for You
The move to CAT won’t change what you need to study. You’ll still face the same domains and objectives on the CC, SSCP, and CCSP exams. However, the number of questions and test times will now sit within a range:
CC and SSCP: 100–125 questions, 2 hours
CCSP: 100–150 questions, 3 hours
Because the exam adapts to your performance, you might finish faster than expected or use the full time. The good news is you don’t need to adjust your current study plan. ISC2 confirms that the content outlines remain the same, so you can continue preparing as you are now. Get CBT Nuggets courses on CC, SSCP, and CCSP to keep on track with your goals.
Getting Yourself Ready for CAT
With the switch to CAT, your focus should be on understanding the domains listed in the current exam outlines. Then, keep using the study tools you already trust. By practicing with adaptive-style questions, you get more familiar with the process and know what to expect when the test adjusts in real time. You can use ISC2’s official training, community study groups, and exam prep guides to build your study structure.
Here are a few more tips to prepare for CAT:
Practice Pacing: You won’t know exactly how many questions you’ll face, so focus on steady progress instead of watching the clock.
Don’t Panic at Tough Questions: The adaptive system is designed to give you items at your skill level—so seeing harder ones usually means you’re doing well.
Stay Focused: Unlike linear exams, you can’t skip or go back to previous questions. Train yourself to commit to each answer before moving on.
Simulate the Format: If possible, use practice tests that mimic adaptive question delivery. This helps reduce the surprise factor on exam day.

Why These Certifications Still Matter
Certifications on the CC, SSCP, and CCSP serve as your foundation in building a cybersecurity career. Start with CC to open doors as an entry-level professional. Move on to SSCP to prove your hands-on security skills. Advance to CCSP to show you can handle cloud security at an expert level. With CAT in place, ISC2 is making its exams more efficient, giving both you and your future employers assurance in the results.
