PgMP training FAQs

How does the PgMP certification impact career trajectory and salary?

Earning the Program Management Professional (PgMP) designation signals a shift from tactical project execution to high-level strategic leadership. Professionals with a PgMP often command significantly higher salaries and are qualified for executive-level roles, such as Program Director or Head of PMO, in sectors including technology, finance, and government.

How much does the PgMP cost?

The Program Management Professional (PgMP) from PMI costs $1,000 if you're not already a member of Project Management International, or $800 if you are a member. Since a membership costs $159/year and comes with additional benefits like discounts on events and professional networking connections, it's worth it to become a member before attempting the PgMP exam.

Is the PgMP harder than the PMP?

The PgMP is significantly more demanding than the PMP due to its focus on strategic program management rather than tactical project execution. While the PMP evaluates the ability to manage a single project, the PgMP requires mastery over multiple, interrelated projects and the realization of organizational benefits. Furthermore, the PgMP involves a two-stage evaluation process: a rigorous Panel Review of professional experience followed by a complex, scenario-based exam that often carries a much lower pass rate than the PMP (somewhere around 35%).

Can a learner obtain the PgMP without a PMP?

Yes, the PMP is not a formal prerequisite for the PgMP. A professional can apply for the Program Management Professional (PgMP) directly, provided they meet the specific education and experience requirements, which include thousands of hours of unique program management leadership. However, because the PgMP assumes a mastery of the foundational concepts found in the PMP, many candidates choose to earn the PMP first to build a stronger baseline for the advanced PgMP training and application process.

What are the prerequisites for the PgMP certification?

The PgMP is an advanced credential intended for senior-level managers. Candidates typically require a secondary or four-year degree along with 48 to 84 months of unique, non-overlapping professional program management experience, as well as 48 months of non-overlapping professional project management experience. This course is designed to help these experienced leaders formalize their knowledge within the PMI framework to successfully pass the credentialing process.

Who is PgMP training for?

This PgMP training is designed for senior-level project and program managers who oversee multiple, complex projects. It is for professionals with extensive experience who are ready to transition from tactical delivery to strategic organizational leadership.
